The farrier came today for what I thought was goin

The farrier came today for what I thought was going to be new shoes, but as they had hardly worn they were refitted.

He is usually well behaved for the farrier but decided this wasn’t his modus operandi for today and so had a mini rear.

Luckily after that he was back to his best behaviour.

You may have noticed that ‘The Life of Riley’ blog has been missing in action lately, so I’ve done a round up of the last couple of months, and normal service of a weekly blog will now commence.

Wherever we walk Mabel always looks for a stick, or in this case she found a piece of wood.

This was on our walk to the stables to see Riley and this field is particularly beautiful at this time of year full of buttercups.

Once she had found a stick you can guarantee it will land at your feet in the hope that you will throw it for her.

Riley certainly has lots of character and it’s one if the things I love about him.

I know that every on hand walk will involve an attempt at a cheeky nibble of grass and I am sure he knows just the right moment when I’ve taken my eye off him.

Riley seems to have a book of 101 excuses why he can’t work.

Over the last five or so weeks he’s had a bad back and had sessions with Amy, our physio @performance_physiotherapy, there have been saddle issues, vaccinations and just when I thought I was going to be back in the saddle he came in from the field that very morning with a cut in his girth area.

So we have been doing in hand walks so he doesn’t think he’s retired and to help him lose the weight he’s gained during his time off.

I have spent to afternoon watching Dressage @wellingtonriding on @horseandcountrytv, wondering when Riley and I can get back to our own dresssge journey.

This week I’m ‘Chatting With’ dressage rider and trainer, Annie Phillips @anniephillipsdressage

Annie is passionate about developing the building blocks of a harmonious dressage partnership that bring confidence to both horse and rider.

She teaches her methods at the Arriba Vista Ranch in Sunol, California and spends her time competing, training and coaching at training clinics as well as virtual instruction. Annie holds a B.S. degree in equine studies with a specialization in equine training from Delaware Valley University. She has also completed a M.Ed. with a specialization in athletics from Goucher College while managing their equestrian facility and aiding in the development of their equine studies minor.

This combination of formal training, equine management background, and years of practical experience has formed her unique approach as a dressage trainer.

Annie also hosts the @equestrienne_podcast with her fellow host Caroline Brockmsn @comin_in_haute

This week has been a mixture of lungeing and long reining.

I’ve long reined a few times under Emma’s instruction. I will admit there have been steering issues at times.

Today I walked Riley in hand around the farm ride. He spooked once and I’m still at a loss as to what it was that made him jump.

Sleepy pony this morning.

I spent this morning chilling with Riley in his stable.

Since he’s been turned out overnight he has been coming in, having his breakfast, eating half of his hay net and then having a long lie down.

I don’t always get the opportunity to be there but I always know from the amount of shavings in his mane and tail.

This afternoon I took him for an in hand walk around the farm ride. I did think I would miss being on board but we both really enjoyed it.

Riley had an appointment with the saddle fitter to

Riley had an appointment with the saddle fitter today.

His saddle needed checking and because of that I haven’t been riding him and as a consequence he’s put weight back on so it was always going to be tricky.

The saddle fitter has said there is a problem with Riley’s back and recommended a chiropractor. So I am now waiting to hear when they can come and see him.

Not the outcome I was hoping for but I want to find out what the issue is and don’t want him suffering.
