Riley and I had another lesson today although it was pouring down so this photo is in a previous day of glorious sunshine.

We are working together much better now and it’s hard to believe that only a couple of weeks ago I wasn’t enjoying trotting on Riley and avoiding it and now I’m happily trotting over the whole school.

We only managed one canter today and I will admit it felt fast although I think that’s because I wasn’t as balanced as I should be.

Horse Riding Lesson Tuesday

Riley through no fault of his own is constantly pushing me outside of my comfort zone and at times I have wished that he already had an education.

I will admit I was nervous going into my lesson as I knew we would have to try canter again.

Then the moment arrives and he does a few strides of canter and I think what an amazing boy. He gives his all and I couldn’t ask for anymore than that.

I must admit the steering on my part leaves a lot to be desired and we won’t even mention my position. We both have work to do but for the rest of the day he’s in the field enjoying his favourite pastime, grazing.

Taken by surprise.

I had a lesson this afternoon with Riley. I headed off to the stables thinking to myself that it would be a straight forward lesson as I would only be walking and trotting.

So I was happily trotting away when Becky my instructor announced that we were going to try and get Riley to canter.

This blew me away as Riley doesn’t know how to canter with a rider and I thought we were a long way off.

Before lockdown one of the yard staff had tried to canter him but he just didn’t know what to do and it all ended in a very fast trot.

So as instructed I kicked on, stayed on with Becky reminding me to breathe.

Then from a very fast trot we broke into a few steps of canter. Result. We repeated the process a few times and we had just one step and then the wrong canter lead but my boy did it.

Horse Riding Lesson Tuesday

Not sure if this face is the look of relief or the joy of a good lesson, perhaps a bit of both.

Today I rode Taggi as on the advice of my instructor Becky from today I’m alternating between riding school horses and Riley.

So this morning I headed off to the stables with some trepidation as I didn’t know who I would be riding and at some point I would be cantering.

I haven’t cantered for a couple of months and as it was something I was doing every week I shouldn’t have been worried and yet I was.

Becky started my lesson with “we are going to canter today, aren’t we?”. Me: “yes” (unconvincingly). Luckily Becky knows me well and doesn’t let me put things off.

Half way through the lesson the moment came and I asked for canter and it wasn’t half as bad as I had feared.

I’m back on board Riley for a lesson tomorrow although no cantering as he is yet to learn but I should be ready when he has.

I had another lesson today. My third this week and it’s been a bit of a roller coaster.

After a brilliant lesson on Tuesday I had an awful schooling session on my own on Wednesday and came home very deflated.
This carried into Thursdays lesson so I was pleased that today was better.

I’m over thinking everything and it isn’t helping. Becky my instructor has said that she is going to put me on a school horse for my next lesson and then moving forward alternate my lessons in this way.

She feels riding a schooled horse will allow me to ride with more instinct and give me more confidence also I haven’t cantered in a while and Riley hasn’t been schooled to do that yet.

Back down to earth with a bump.

After such a brilliant lesson yesterday I think I had high expectations for today. Nothing seemed to go right and everything we had worked on seemed to go out of the window and I was left feeling clueless and deflated.

I need to remind myself that with horses there are highs and lows and tomorrow is a new day.
