Rachel is a musician and dressage rider.

Rachel got her first horse when she was 40 and just over 4 years ago bought her beloved KWPN mare Gracie. The pair are on a fantastic dressage journey together and have progressed from unaffiliated competitions to BD Advanced Medium during this short but eventful period.

Riley is coming along so well on his schooling liv

Riley is coming along so well on his schooling livery. I am amazed how far he has come in the last two months.

Today Emma rode him first and I hopped on for a little canter.

I completely lost my confidence cantering so in the last couple of weeks I’ve hopped on board a handful of times after Emma has cantered.

Today was the best by far and for the first time I actually managed to do some steering as well.

It had been frustrating to lose my confidence and I think back to when I could canter without any problems however I try not to dwell in it. I’m regaining it one step a time and feeling pleased with the small wins.

At the end of the schooling session I took Riley out for a hack. There is one particular part that birds always seem to fly out of the bushes and Riley jumps out of his skin but bless him he manages to compose himself and carry on.

He is a superstar.

After mucking out this morning I came home and chi

After mucking out this morning I came home and chilled out.

I eventually made it back to the stables late afternoon thinking that I should hack but the weather wasn’t making it appealing.

In the end I tacked up and headed out. It was so windy and someone had said how wild it was on the farm ride so I took a more sheltered route.

Although this didn’t help as Riley jumped out of his skin three times not all due to the wind but I came he was more alert then usual.

So I cut the hack short and headed back to the stables sooner than planned.

He’s now all tucked up happily munching his haynet and much more chilled.

Just asking myself why I bother getting rugs cleaned?

Riley was turned out on Saturday with a clean rug and I think the only reason it managed to stay clean until Monday morning was due to:

1. The ground being frozen on Saturday

2. There was no turnout on Sunday

Monday morning, the ground had thawed and I watched on as he rolled turning his nice clean navy rug into brown.

It’s just a good job I love watching him roll as he’s easily forgiven.

I had planned to go hacking this afternoon that was until the snow arrived.

So it was an afternoon in the stable for Riley all tucked up in my favourite @weatherbeetauk rug. I love this rug and how smart he looks wearing it and of course on a practical note it keeps him toasty.

Now my plan for the rest of the day is to be tucked up at home with a glass of red wine and a movie night.

I hope it doesn’t get any colder as if I have to add any more layers I won’t be able to move 😂

I’ve started walking the dogs first thing in the morning again.

I used to however when I bought Riley I went to the stables early to use the manège before it got busy with lessons.

Now I’ve moved Riley to the new yard I’m not heading there quite so early so the morning walk has resumed.

I must admit sometimes the thought of stepping out into the cold from the warm house isn’t always appealing but there is never a time when I don’t absolutely love it.

Jumping for joy. Riley jumped for the first time

Jumping for joy.

Riley jumped for the first time today and it was amazing to watch and I was very proud of him.

A big thank you to my instructor Emma for jumping him and as he can be tricky to say the least on the lunge he didn’t always make things easy.

Jumping is something that we are going to learn together and whilst I’m a flatwork person it will be lovely to take him on some farm rides and do some low level jumping as a change in his routine.
