Today Riley and I had another lesson with Emma.

Today Riley and I had another lesson with Emma.

Although instead of riding we lunged. Riley was rather naughty and made numerous attempts to avoid working and kept turning in.

So Emma decided to long rein instead. I wasn’t sure if Riley had ever done that before however he was really good and we are going to start incorporating it in his routine.

Emma is going to teach me how to do it myself next week, which did leave me with a slightly bemused look on my face. I’ve only just got used to lungeing with one line let alone two.

Horse Riding Lesson

I had another great lesson with Emma. I really look forward to the lessons and they are hard work. Riley and I are learning so much. One thing that I have discovered is that I have a weak left leg and it does make it tricky particularly when I’m doing a leg yield. (If anyone has any exercise recommendations I would be grateful).

Also, operation get Riley used to the clippers has commenced. I bought my first pair of clippers and after having Riley sedated last year I figured that it would be a slow process.

So for the last couple of day’s I’ve switched them on so he can get used to the noise. Day one he wasn’t at all happy although today he didn’t stamp his foot quite as much. I’ve also resorted to giving him a haynet as he is greedy and I knew this would be a helpful distraction.

Horse Riding Lesson Tuesday

May just have to become Monday as the lesson with my new instructor is on that day.

I enjoyed my lesson so much and I feel as though I’m learning so much. We did a leg yield exercise that I haven’t done before.

This morning I lunged Riley something that I haven’t done for months. I’m going to add that into his weekly routine.

On one rein he was very well behaved but on the other rein he was a challenge so to end the session on a high note I kept the circle smaller and we finished with a few circles without him trying to turn in.

After schooling this morning Riley and I hacked down the lane at the back of the yard.

To say he was slow is an understatement, he certainly wasn’t in the mood for a brisk walk.

To be fair to him he had worked well before that as we tried to worked on some of the things from Monday’s lesson.

Horse Riding Lesson Tuesday

Riley and I joined the Tuesday group class today.

We had been to the class a number of times a few months ago but clashes with the time meant we hadn’t been able to go.

The class is always fun and very much feels part social part serious. It also means Riley gets to ride with other horses which I feel is good for him.

As the class was thus evening I do think he got a bit of a shock when I went to get him out of his stable and probably wasn’t too keen to be pulled away from his hay net.

I did make sure there was a tasty carrot for him on his return.

I had the most amazing riding lesson on Riley today.

This was my third lesson with my new freelance instructor Emma.

The last two weeks she has been getting a feel for Riley and I. Today
we worked on his straightness and mine.

We also worked on leg yields and much to my surprise Riley did really well and they were definitely the best ones we have ever done. It was though he had levelled up. He was really switched on and whilst he isn’t always agreeable to doing things that he doesn’t find easy he gave me what I was asking for.

I think I spent the remainder of the lesson grinning like a Cheshire Cat and I must admit I lost count of how many post lesson cuddles we had.
